As an acoustic and electric bass player, Greg Garrison has made an impact in the bluegrass, Americana and jazz worlds through his work with Mighty Poplar, Leftover Salmon, Chris Thile, Punch Brothers, Lyle Lovett, Bill Frisell, Don Byron, Bryan Sutton, Dave Douglas, Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush and Del McCoury among many others. In addition, he has recorded three albums as a leader; 2011’s Low Lonesome, the 2020 release Sycamore, and the co-led Bluegrass and the Abstract Truth from 2022.
Formed in 202o along with members of Watchhouse, Punch Brothers, and Billy Strings, Mighty Poplar has quickly become one of the must see bands in bluegrass. Their 2023 eponymous release, “Mighty Poplar”, was nominated for a Bluegrass Album of the Year Grammy.
Greg was a founding member of the acclaimed Punch Brothers, with whom he recorded two albums and garnered two Grammy nominations. Greg has also been a member of the bluegrass-rock band Leftover Salmon since 2000, recording (and producing) several albums and headlining at high profile venues and festivals throughout North America like Red Rocks, the Ryman Auditorium, Telluride Bluegrass, the Vancouver Folk Festival, and Bonnaroo.
In addition to his busy touring schedule, Garrison is a part of the full time faculty in the Music and Entertainment Studies department at the University of Colorado Denver. He holds a DMA in Jazz Studies from the University of Colorado, a MM in Bass Performance from the University of Northern Colorado, and a BM from the University of Illinois.
